Snapdragon guide

Why are they called snapdragons?

Gently squeeze the side of a snapdragon flower and it opens and closes like a dragon’s mouth. Their botanical name is Antirrhinum.

What a fresh snapdragon looks like

Each stem has open flowers at the bottom and tight buds towards the tip. The buds open up the stem over several days, so a fresh stem has plenty still to come.

How to care for snapdragons

  • Trim the stems on an angle and put them in fresh water straight away.
  • Change the water every couple of days.
  • Pinch off flowers at the bottom of the stem as they fade.
  • Keep the vase upright: snapdragon tips curve upwards towards the light, so a stem left on its side will bend.

Using snapdragons

Their height and shape add movement to bouquets and vase arrangements. They pair well with roses, stocks and lisianthus, and look striking on their own in a tall vase.

Snapdragon questions

How long do snapdragons last in a vase?

Usually around a week. The buds keep opening up the stem, especially with fresh water every couple of days.

Why are my snapdragons bending?

Snapdragon tips naturally grow upwards towards the light. Keep the vase upright and turn it each day for straighter stems.

Do snapdragons have a scent?

Most cut snapdragons have little or no scent, which makes them a good choice for people who prefer unscented flowers.

Can I get snapdragons delivered same day in Melbourne?

Yes, when they’re in stock. Order by 1pm, Monday to Saturday, for same-day delivery within 30 km of the Melbourne CBD ($14.99).
